LAURA HUNT:
MY EYES ON TEXAS

Grand Hall at NRH Centre Lobby

June 28 - September 27, 2024

Artist Statement: My Eyes On Texas

Growing up as the youngest child of Central Texas farmers, I developed a deep love for big skies, broad horizons and hardscrabble small towns. My deep connection to a place infused with a cultural concoction all its own has shaped my identity.

I aim to evoke the subtlety, the drama and the quirkiness I find on my road trips. The images reflect the play of light on fields and scrubby pastures under an ever-changing sky. Ordinary views and expansive ones hold equal attraction, speaking of an atmosphere that is better felt than explained.

Although my paintings have a naturalistic foundation, abstraction moves the work beyond mere representation. The application of marks and scrapes right across an almost completed work contributes emotional content and shifts the subject from specific to universal.

My Eyes On Texas is an ongoing exploration of both the ordinary and the iconic landscapes that characterize my home state. I invite you to view these paintings as expressions of a dynamic, changing entity that holds stories, memories, and a profound sense of place.

2024 SPRING PHOTOGRAPHY EXHIBITION

Grand Hall at NRH Centre Lobby

March 15 - Extended to June 26, 2024

6000 Hawk Avenue, North Richland Hills, Texas 76180

22 talented photographers from around our community shared their view of our world in this compelling exhibition. The 2024 Spring Photography collection was comprised of breathtaking landscapes and nature studies by James Austin, Braxton Chu, Jordan Flowers, Brandon Garner, Larry Jostes, Cathy Jostes, Bernice Mohanadhas, Mike Mullins and Stephanie Whitlock. Exquisite florals have been photographed by Janet Cunningham, Robin Doyle, Beth Wasson and Teddi Zonker. Stunning and colorful portraits of unusual subjects (a bright-faced mandrill monkey and a heron) have been captured by Trisha Baker and Marty Kusmierski. The exhibition also featured a deeply human study of two Amish brothers by noted national photographer F. Robert Openshaw.  Kristyn Marrs, Drew Nelson, Sara Ocnaschek, Kenichi Ono, Shane Whitehead and Tiffany Williams rounded out the show with their remarkable studies of the complex and beautiful patterns found in the way light and color respond to man-made objects such as bridges, a birdhouse and mechanical systems. We were delighted to share these thoughtful and arresting images that express the unique vision that each photographer communicates through their individual work.

Betsy Times 2

Betsy Horn & Betsy Allaire

Grand Hall at NRH Centre Lobby

January 5 - March 8, 2024

Betsy Horn interprets how she responds emotionally to her subjects through her unique use of color and line. Working primarily in acrylics, she uses color to either portray a subject so that it is recognizable or she exaggerates and abstracts what she sees. Outlines are used to define areas of contrast as in a stained-glass window. Highlights and shadows are added with short strokes and dots. The end results are remarkable explorations of the spiritual experiences that she has discovered within nature's colors and patterns.

Betsy Allaire creates vividly-hued, nature-inspired visuals that she paints directly onto silk. Using special dyes, Betsy meticulously applies layers of intermixable thin colors onto a prepared fabric strip until she obtains an image with a bright and bold palette. Silk painting has a 3,500 year history in Asia and has been practiced for hundreds of years in Europe. Betsy's lively floral motifs are abundant in rich, swirling designs that build upon ancient tradition.
